FSQ (Funk Style Quality) — A Production Team and DJ Duo
FSQ (Funk Style Quality) is a 6 man production team releasing quality dance music across a variety of styles including funk, disco, house, northern soul, and their own brand of Sly and Robbie influenced new wave, dubbed “Caribbean Disco”.
Soul Clap launched the group in 2014 with the FSQ debut EP, “Zulu Congo Call” which got 9/10 in Mixmag and DJ Mag. Their remix work for other artists can be found across a variety of labels — Midnight Riot Records, Jalapeno Records, Wolf + Lamb, Bastard Jazz and many other dance music indies. Their full length album will be released in the spring of 2018 on Soul Clap Records.
FSQ production team members include:
Philadelphia based One Era who puts an indelible tropical stamp on most every FSQ record especially in the percussion department. Boston based Chas Bronz is an amazing guitar slinger, and Bay Area based GKoop is a Grammy nominated producer. GKoop, a founding member of FSQ, is well known in the hip hop world having co-written or produced in 2017 alone: Migos’ “Bad and Boujie”, 2 Chainz “It’s a Vibe” and Meek Mill’s “Fall Thru”. In 2017, Midnight Magic keyboardist and producer Morgan Wiley joins FSQ to round out the collective. Everyone in FSQ is an adept multi instrumentalist.
FSQ DJ sets are helmed by FSQ members Chuck Da Fonk Fishman and Sa’d “The Hourchild Ali.
They are both producers and DJs. The two met over 20 years ago when George Clinton assigned his nephew Sa’d to look after a very young Chuck who joined George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic on tour in 1994. Today, Sa’d and Chuck are instrumental in bringing George Clinton, original Funkadelic bassist Billy Bass, legendary vocalist Nona Hendryx, and other important talents to Soul Clap’s recording efforts. Soul Clap’s 2016 self titled album featured both Sa’d and Chuck as credited producers.
Sa’d managed legendary house music artists such as Fingers Inc. (Larry “Mr. Fingers” Heard, Robert Owens, and Harry Dennis). He also was a representative for Tommy Boy Records in Atlanta and was an important figure in the early days of hip hop. Sa’d’s importance in the hip hop community is noted and today he is a board member of The National Museum of Hip Hop. Chuck grew up in Philadelphia as an avid record shopper with a love for new wave and funk. Upon meeting Chuck in Colorado in 1993, Clinton dubbed him “Chuck ‘Da Funk’ Fishman.”
The duo DJ together are yin and yang, playing a broad range of dance culled from their deep knowledge of yesterday and today’s music. Sa’D, a child prodigy, began in 1977 as a Disco Soul DJ and going B2B with Chuck Da Fonk brings that Nu-Disco-Balearic, modern chic sound that is: FSQ.
FSQ’s DJ duo has performed at major festivals like Movement Festival, Miami Music Week, Moonrise Festival, Voodoo Festival and important venues like Black Flamingo, Output, Cielo, Short Stop Los Angeles, LeBain NYC, Ace Hotel Palm Springs, Elbo Room SF, Eighteenth Street Lounge DC, Electric Pickle Miami, Hostal La Torre Ibiza, The BPM Festival, Kingdom Austin, BPM, Soho House-Miami, Santos Party House, Pianos-NYC
